Most of our rented homes are in Manchester, and we work with Manchester City Council through the Manchester Equipment and Adaptations Partnership (MEAP) to provide support.
If you live in Manchester
These are small changes or pieces of equipment, such as:
- Handrails, inside or outside your home
- Lever taps
- Other fittings to make your home easier to manage
Once your request has been assessed and approved, Southway will arrange for the work to be done. In some cases, a specialist contractor may need to visit.
Cost:
Minor adaptations are fully funded by Southway and will not cost you anything.
Major adaptations involve bigger changes to your home, such as:
- Wet rooms
- Stairlifts
- Adapted kitchens
These adaptations require a full assessment by an Occupational Therapist from MEAP. If approved, MEAP will ask Southway for permission to go ahead and will arrange the work through one of their contractors.
Cost:
Major adaptations are usually part-funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant. This grant is means tested. Depending on your income or savings, you may need to contribute toward the cost.

In other local authority areas where Southway has fewer homes, all adaptation assessments and work are managed by the local council.
This includes both:
- Minor adaptations, like handrails
- Major adaptations, like stairlifts or wet rooms
The local authority will contact Southway to approve the work, and depending on their policy, we may contribute to the cost.
