Fences and hedges
Southway doesn’t usually provide new replacement boundaries for tenants, including fencing.
However, we recognise you may need a boundary to be fitted in exceptional circumstances. Here are some examples:
- A group of young people regularly access the gardens at the back of your home as there’s no effective boundary. This has led to reported incidents of theft and vandalism, and the local police have confirmed it's an issue.
- A young child in your home has significant learning difficulties, confirmed by your local medical team. Your home is situated next to an extremely busy road; however, there is no fence at the front, which could pose a safety risk.
Natural boundaries pilot scheme
We realise safe and secure boundaries are important to you. We’re trialling the installation of environmentally friendly natural boundaries, such as hedgerows and privets, with temporary fencing to support them until they're established.
This programme helps residents reduce their personal carbon footprints, in line with feedback received as part of our Inspired by Our Communities approach. It also supports our Zero Carbon goals.
If feedback is positive, we’ll provide more natural boundaries in the future.
Fencing applications are currently closed
We’re not accepting applications at the moment as this year’s budget has already been fully allocated due to high demand.

Your garden and outside space
You’re responsible for managing and maintaining your garden.
We may take action if your garden is untidy, for example, when we see:
- Overgrown plants, hedges or lawns
- Unauthorised alterations, for example, car hard standings and removal of hedgerows
- Materials such as car parts, furniture, and white goods stored in gardens, driveways or ginnels
- Animal waste and pet debris left in gardens
