Gas inspections
By law, we must check the safety of your gas supply and appliances at least once a year. We also carry out a safety check when someone moves into a new home.
We have our own team of Gas Safe registered engineers who will:
- Check your gas pipes, meter and ventilation
- Inspect any connected appliances, like boilers, water heaters, fires and cookers
- Disconnect any appliance that’s unsafe to use to protect you and your neighbours
Your annual gas safety check is quick and could save your life. We'll write to you well in advance offering a date and a choice of either a morning or afternoon appointment.
Please make sure someone is available for this visit to give us access to your home. If you need to change the appointment, call us on 0161 448 4200 so we can arrange a new time and avoid a wasted visit.
We have the legal power to enter your home if we’re repeatedly denied access.
If you buy your own gas appliances
Any gas appliances you buy, like a fire or cooker, must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. They will give you a certificate (CP12) as proof. You’ll need to keep this.
We’ll service any gas appliances you own, except your cooker. We’ll still check that your cooker is safe, but you’ll need to arrange for it to be serviced yourself.
You can find a local Gas Safe registered engineer at GasSafeRegister.co.uk.

Gas leaks and carbon monoxide
Unlike gas used for fuel which has a smell added so you can detect it, carbon monoxide has no smell. It can escape from faulty appliances and cause serious harm or even death.
Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning:
- Drowsiness or tiredness
- Headaches
- Chest or stomach pain
- Feeling unwell, especially when you're asleep or in bed
If you smell gas or think carbon monoxide may be leaking:
- Open all windows and doors and do not sleep in it
- Don’t light a match, candle, cigarette or anything else with an open flame
- Don’t turn any lights or electrical switches on or off
- Turn off the gas at the meter, unless it’s in a basement or hard-to-reach area
- Leave your home if you can do so safely
- Call Cadent (formerly National Grid) immediately on 0800 111 999
- Call Southway on 0161 448 4200
- If you feel unwell, get urgent medical help straight away
After Cadent has made your home safe, we’ll arrange for an independent gas auditor to check everything before your appliances are turned back on.
From September 2023, we’ve been fitting carbon monoxide alarms in any room that contains a fixed combustion appliance like a gas boiler or gas fire. This does not include gas cookers.
We’ll install your alarm during your next scheduled gas safety check or any other planned works.
If you have questions, please speak to the engineer when they visit.
If your heating or hot water isn’t working, or you notice a leak in your system:

- We offer 24/7 emergency cover, every day of the year
